I have found that my favorite pieces tend to depict living things- humans and animals. The works that actually have more meaning to me tend to use bodies or faces to convey emotion. I have also depicted objects a lot in past years to practice techniques and form my own styles. I have learned that I enjoy drawing metal and glass because the reflections can be so complex. My pieces tend to be darker when I draw in color since I prefer black paper; otherwise, there can be a variety of shades in my monochromatic pieces.
With fine art, I tend to use pencils, pen and ink because I can create work with more clarity and control then I can with paint. This being said, I actually prefer digital painting to anything else. With the computer, I can experiment and adjust fine details without worrying about ruining the entire piece. So it is the perfect medium for a perfectionist like me. I tend to shade with crosshatching in all of my pieces, digital or traditional.
My goal is to convey thoughts and feelings without words, and to show abstract ideas with concrete objects. I feel it is easier to put meaning into my work with humans as subjects. Mostly, my work is just an insight into my own mind. I’ve always found it difficult to convey my thoughts verbally, so I’ve taken to doing so visually instead.
I create my work with the intention to depict the perspective of a mind with depression and anxiety. By focusing on the smallest details of the piece, I am able to make it more realistic as a whole. In the future, I want to really focus on digital art, and begin working with 3D modeling. I’ve been working on a series of concept art for awhile now, and I think it would be pretty neat to make models for those characters.
