Senior Artist Spotlight: Christina Mathers
Who is Christina?

I am 18. I am a senior at OAHS. I have 1 sister, my mom, my dad, and 2 dogs.
How did you become an artist? How long have you been practicing?

I was inspired by many of my family members, who all share a passion for art and creativity. I definitely inherited that gene and have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil.

What inspires your work and creative philosophy? Is there anyone or anything in your life that has influenced your art or creative vision?

When my grandmother died, in July of 2016, art became a serious creative outlet to help with my overwhelming feelings and emotions. I knew from then on it was something I was born to do.

What is your favorite medium? Why?

I love charcoal and colored pencil, mainly because of the contrast you can create and the details, whereas I love to paint, it just doesn’t have the same effect.

What do you like most about being an artist?

I love being able to inspire others and give a different perspective of life than you can see in reality. Art is so different from other forms of media, and that’s what I love about it. You can create a message that can be interpreted in so many different ways.
Do you want to pursue this in the future?

Yes! I plan on studying art education.
What does your art mean to you?

A crazy question, because I ask myself that almost every day. Art to me means happiness, life, and hope. It gives me motivation when I don’t have any left.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on a charcoal self-portrait for Art 4.

Is there a certain theme you tend to portray in your artwork?

Definitely emotion, as I love to draw things that give people a different perspective. For example, for our last project, I drew a military homecoming featuring myself and my boyfriend, who is in the Army National Guard.

Favorite food? Dessert? Song? Artist? Book? Explain.

I love pizza! My favorite dessert is definitely ice cream, specifically oreo. I am a huge Norman Rockwell fan. His art was hung up all around my grandparents when I was a kid and was always inspired by his individuality.

What's your favorite piece you've ever created?
Probably my up close drawing of my dog Winnie. I placed in the Mass Congressional Districts art competition for that.

Sum up your art style in three words.

Realist, moving, emotional

Where do you get your ideas?
Simply just from around me. I love realism so I could base something off of a picture and make it look extremely accurate.
